Question
about ephedrine in Pinellia:
1. There are 2 kinds of Pinellia
used in Chinese medicine. A report of ephedrine in pinellia
had been from tests with the source material Pinellia
ternata (referred to as "Northern Banxia")
while most of the pinellia used in China
and in the West is actually from a related plant that
has the same uses: Typhonium flagelliforme (referred to
as "Southern Banxia"), which
has no ephedrine.
2. Pinellia ternata ("Northern
Banxia"), raw or processed, contains ephedrine
about 0.002-0.003% (20-30 ppm). It's
much lower than Ma-Huang which contains from 0.7-1.2%
(7,000-12,000 ppm).
